Marvin Jones Signs New Contract With Detroit Lions
Marvin Jones had a quieter season in 2022, as he began to play second fiddle among the Jaguars receivers to Christian Kirk and even Zay Jones. However, he was still a role player for the team, bringing in 46 receptions for 529 yards and three touchdowns. This was the lowest receiving yardage he’d had in a season since an injury-shortened 2018 season, suggesting he may be approaching the end of his career. However, he’ll still be looking to prove in 2023 that he has something left in the tank.
Jones played in college with the California Golden Bears from 2008 to 2011. He was drafted in 2012 in the fifth round by the Cincinnati Bengals. After a quiet rookie season, he broke out in 2013, finishing with 712 yards and 10 touchdowns, including one four-touchdown game. He missed the entire 2014 season due to injury, but came back in and put together an 800-yard season in 2015 before walking in free agency.
Jones signed with the Detroit Lions in 2016 and became one of the primary receivers for Matthew Stafford after Calvin Johnson’s retirement. He stayed with them through 2020 and had his lone 1,000-yard season (1,101 total) in 2017 – a year where he also scored nine touchdowns and averaged 18 yards a catch. Injuries brought down his stats a little in 2018 and 2019 (though he had another four-touchdown game in the latter season), but he bounced back and came up just short of another 1,000-yard season in 2020 (978).
He signed with the Jaguars in 2021 and was one of the brighter spots on offense, bringing in 73 receptions for 832 yards and four touchdowns. That was enough for him to lead the team in receiving that year.
Thus far in his career, Jones has 894 receptions for 7,386 yards and 58 touchdowns.
