2024 Dynasty Quarterback Rankings

Cornerstones

  • Josh Allen
  • Patrick Mahomes
  • Jalen Hurts

Long-term starters with contract security and QB1 overall upside. Hurts is more likely to outscore Mahomes over the next three years than not, but for the real dynasty leagues that last Mahomes has 12-15 years of excellence left in the tank. Josh Allen is the perfect blend of the two, where his elite rushing now will continue to elevate his fantasy points, while his arm talent and meaningful contributions to Buffalo will keep him around for years to come.

Set and Forget QB1

  • Lamar Jackson
  • C.J. Stroud
  • Jordan Love
  • Kyler Murray
  • Caleb Williams
  • Joe Burrow

These are also players with contract security and upside. Jackson and Murray have QB1 overall in their range of outcomes, but their ability to stay dynasty studs past 30 is in question. Stroud, Love and Burrow are the warm fuzzy blankets of dynasty. They’ll keep you secure and always in contention, but don’t have the same year after year upside as the names above them.

Caleb Williams has a case to be in a tier of his own. He simply moves differently, and finds himself in the best situation a number one overall pick has ever been in. Somewhere between three and five elite weapons will keep the passing game steady, and he can make linebackers look silly in the open field. The nature versus nurture argument is null here as he finds himself ready to perform early and often.

Upside or Security in Question

  • Anthony Richardson
  • Justin Herbert
  • Trevor Lawrence
  • Jayden Daniels
  • Dak Prescott
  • Brock Purdy
  • Jared Goff

Richardson and Daniels could break fantasy wide open with their rushing ability. But can they stay healthy? Herbert, Lawrence, Goff and Purdy are set and forget high end QB2s, but do they pose the week to week dominance that more involved rushing quarterbacks provide? This tier is enticing for two different reasons, but are likely being over drafted in superflex leagues.

Quarterback Two With Benefits

  • Tua Tagavailoa
  • Drake Maye
  • J.J. McCarthy
  • Baker Mayfield

If you want a solid starter, Mayfield and Tagavailoa are the guys for you. They offer spike weeks due to their weapons, and have long term job security (at least that’s anticipated for Tua). If you want upside and the chance to launch up multiple tiers, Maye has all the clubs in his golf bag to succeed in the NFL and McCarthy has Justin Jefferson. What more would managers look for in rookie quarterbacks? Pick your poison, each has an argument to succeed.

The Twilight Zone

  • Bo Nix
  • Will Levis
  • Geno Smith
  • Bryce Young
  • Deshaun Watson
  • Daniel Jones
  • Matthew Stafford
  • Kirk Cousins
  • Aaron Rodgers
  • Derek Carr

Old vets returning from catastrophic injuries? Check. Young quarterbacks with huge red flags? Check. Daniel Jones and Derek Carr in all their glory? Check. This tier consists of win now options if they can stay healthy, young guns who can ascend with a little security and performance, and even some bounce back candidates if all goes well.

Michael Penix and Despair in the 2024 Dynasty Quarterback Rankings

  • Michael Penix
  • Justin Fields
  • Russell Wilson

If dynasty managers were patient, maybe Penix could be higher. But there were multiple years where managers could go trade for Jordan Love for a second round pick. Penix is the same age now that Jordan Love was heading into 2023. There likely hasn’t been a more polarizing pick at eight overall, but Penix could find himself riding the pine and making an indent on it before he plays. Fields and Wilson are going to “battle it out” to start in 2024, and if Fields hits he’s going to hit big. At least while he plays. Neither has any kind of security, so they’re safely at the bottom of the list.

The Raiders

  • Gardner Minshew
  • Aidan O’Connell

Okay the Pittsburgh Steelers weren’t the complete bottom. The Raiders quarterbacks are also going to duke it out, but the Raiders offense isn’t exactly one to invest in right now. Both are shots in the dark as low end QB2s, and will require an injury to dynasty manager’s real starters to be started.

Backups Worth Stashing

  • Jameis Winston
  • Drew Lock
  • Jacoby Brissett
  • Trey Lance
  • Kenny Pickett
  • Spencer Rattler
  • Jordan Travis
  • Sam Howell
  • Sam Darnold
  • Jake Browning
  • Any backup quarterback if they’re free and there’s room on the bench or in the taxi squad

Quarterback injuries were at an all time high in 2023, and while that’s not likely to be repeated, backup quarterbacks are an easy asset to stash and flip, or stash and cut if all else fails.
