New York Giants head coach Brian Daboll said that Tommy DeVito will continue to be the team’s starter and that he’ll start for the Giants when they play the Dallas Cowboys on Thanksgiving Day “if he’s healthy.”
Following the Giants’ 30-7 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Daboll was asked if DeVito would be New York’s starter on Thanksgiving. He answered, “If he’s healthy and ready to go, he will be.”
DeVito was forced to miss a play on New York’s final drive of the game yesterday. After sitting out one play and coming back in, he took another huge hit and “didn’t leave the stadium looking great,” according to ESPN’s Jordan Raanan.
DeVito went 21 for 31 against the Buccaneers for 189 passing yards and 32 rushing yards. Though DeVito didn’t turn the ball over, he only led the Giants to one scoring drive.
Giants To Continue Starting Undrafted Free Agent At Quarterback
New York is clearly waving the white flag on the season and embracing the tank. If New York actually wanted to win games, then they would’ve named Drew Lock the starter over DeVito. Lock has won games across multiple seasons and has attempted almost 600 more passes in his career than DeVito. The Giants are going with DeVito because they can’t risk winning any more games.
New York is currently tied with the Jacksonville Jaguars and the Las Vegas Raiders for the worst record in the NFL, which means that they’re in line to have a top-three pick in the 2025 NFL Draft. With Trevor Lawrence under contract in Jacksonville through at least 2028, there’s a good chance that they won’t be drafting a quarterback this coming April. That means the Giants or the Raiders will likely be the first team to take a quarterback off the board in the 2025 Draft.
Embrace The Tank
New York should try to lose as many games as possible to guarantee they have the first overall pick in the draft. While there’s nothing wrong with drafting second overall, the Giants want to make sure they can pick whoever they want to be the franchise’s next quarterback. However, they won’t be able to do that if they have a better record than the Raiders. To ensure you continue to lose games, you stay committed to Tommy DeVito.
It would be an unmitigated disaster if the Giants started Drew Lock, won a few games, and then played themselves out of a prime draft position. By starting DeVito, the Giants can claim they’re trying to see what he can do while protecting their draft position. Hell, New York may not win another game this season with DeVito at the helm, which would be a good thing for the Giants.
