Many NFL fans don’t know much about Jason Bean. Yet, the quarterback out of Kansas could become an important player for the Indianapolis Colts. He can play multiple positions, sort of like former NFL quarterback Kordell Stewart.
Eleven quarterbacks were selected in this year’s draft. Unfortunately for Bean, he never heard his name called. However, shortly after the draft, he signed with the Colts as an undrafted free agent.
Just because Bean wasn’t drafted doesn’t mean he can’t have a successful career. Fellow undrafted QBs Warren Moon and Kurt Warner became Hall of Famers. Meanwhile, guys like Tony Romo, Jeff Garcia, and Jake Delhomme were Pro-Bowlers. Plus, a lot of non-quarterbacks like John Randle and Antonio Gates had amazing careers as well. Bean may never be a Hall of Famer or make any Pro Bowls, but he could turn out to be a quality NFL player.
This Indianapolis Colts Player Could Be the Next Kordell Stewart
Jason Bean’s Football Career
Jason Bean began his collegiate career with the North Texas Mean Green. He threw for 1,307 yards and 17 touchdowns during his three seasons at the school. On the ground, he added 440 yards and five touchdowns.
Bean then entered the transfer portal and
transferred to Kansas in 2021. He threw for 1,252 yards and six touchdowns in his first season with the Jayhawks. He also rushed for 400 yards and a pair of TDs. In 2022, he recorded 1,280 passing yards and 14 touchdowns, along with 222 rushing yards and 14 TDs on the ground.
Bean passed for 2,130 yards with 18 touchdowns last season. He added 280 rushing yards and three TDs. Bean produced 410 passing yards and five touchdowns versus Oklahoma State. He was incredible against UNLV during the
Guaranteed Rate Bowl. In that contest, he threw for 449 yards and six touchdowns, leading the Jayhawks to a 49-36 victory. It was Kansas’ first bowl win in more than a decade.
Who is Kordell Stewart?
Who in the world is Kordell Stewart? If you followed the NFL during the 90s, you certainly know who he is. But if you’ve only been a fan for the past few years, you probably have no clue.
Stewart is known for his time with the
Pittsburgh Steelers. He was nicknamed “Slash” due to his ability to play quarterback, wide receiver, and running back. He basically played the role that current
New Orleans Saints QB Taysom Hill does now.
Jason Bean could become a Kordell Stewart/Taysom Hill “Swiss army knife” type of player. His speed and athleticism led to him seeing snaps at quarterback, receiver, and running back at Kansas.
But to be that guy, Bean, of course, has to make an NFL roster first.
Anthony Richardson is the Colts’ starting quarterback, and Joe Flacco will serve as his primary backup. Bean will compete with Kedon Slovis, who was also signed as an undrafted free agent, and Sam Ehlinger for the No. 3 QB spot.
It’ll be interesting to see if Bean makes the Colts’ 53-man roster this year. He can earn a spot if he impresses during training camp and the preseason. Is he the next Kordell Stewart? We shall see.
