Report: Tight End Trey Burton Expected to Sign With Chicago Bears

Trey Burton

Trey Burton is expected to sign a new deal with the Chicago Bears once free agency opens, per NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo. According to Ian Rapoport, Burton is signing a four-year deal worth $32 million. Burton played the first four years of his NFL career with the Philadelphia Eagles.

Chicago Bears Signing Trey Burton to Four-Year Deal

Burton is best known for his part in the Eagles fourth-and-goal “Philly Special” trick play in their Super Bowl LII win. Burton received a hand-off from running back Corey Clement following a direct snap on the play and completed a touchdown pass to quarterback Nick Foles that gave Philadelphia a 10-point halftime lead.

Burton signed with the Philadelphia Eagles as an undrafted free agent in 2014 and was primarily a special teams contributor in his first two NFL seasons under then-Eagles head coach Chip Kelly. When current head coach Doug Pederson took over in 2016, Burton saw his role increase, but long-time Eagles tight ends Brent Celek and Zach Ertz have remained ahead of Burton on the depth chart.

In the 2016 and 2017 regular seasons, Burton caught a combined 60 passes for 575 yards and six touchdowns. Burton reportedly declined a low contract offer from the Eagles in February, although the tight end denied those reports the week before free agency and claimed that he “would love to be back.”

In college, Burton played multiple positions at Florida in Urban Meyer‘s spread offense, including wide receiver, tight end, quarterback, and fullback. As a freshman, Burton set a Florida Gators franchise record when he scored six touchdowns in a single game. Burton finished with the fastest 40-yard dash time among all 22 tight ends at the 2014 NFL Combine.
