In 2018, Melbourne City Wrestling (MCW) continues to grow their audience and further stake claim to being the pinnacle of Australian wrestling. Throughout last year two of the biggest highlights included the companies biggest show ever featuring New Japan Pro Wrestling star Tetsuya Naito, and a sold-out show at the Thornbury Theatre the night before WWE Super Show-Down (a weekend which many fans argue MCW won). Now, as MCW enters 2019 they look to reset and continue their growth with their first show of the year, Vendetta which takes place this Saturday at the Thornbury Theatre. Taking a quick look down the card the reset is in full effect, with plenty of new faces and some old teams reforming.
Air Force Three Match: Robbie Eagles vs. Jett vs. Tyson
After unsuccessfully challenging MCW Heavyweight Champion Gino Gambino back at MCW New Horizons, ‘The Sniper Of The Skies’ Robbie Eagles is looking to kick-start the new year by taking on two debuting graduates of the MCW Academy. Whilst little is known of Jett and Tyson, they mustn’t be overlooked by Eagles, given that they have come through the MCW Academy, where they have been under the tutelage of some of the countries finest. Look for this to have a rapid pace with lots of aerial offence.
Avary vs. Shazza McKenzie
Towards the end of 2018, Avary and Indi Hartwell were locked in a battle over the top spot in the MCW Women’s Division, but this weekend Avary looks to add another accolade to her resume by knocking off the returning Shazza McKenzie. The return of McKenzie to the division makes it stronger than it has been for some time, and may be laying the foundations for the crowning of an inaugural MCW Women’s Champion?
Indi Hartwell vs. Tarlee
The MCW Women’s Division will also see some new talent arriving on the scene as newcomer Tarlee looks to make a name for herself by knocking off the self-proclaimed ‘top competitor’ in the division Indi Hartwell. With MCW’s Womens Division now stacked, a decisive victory here would give Hartwell more ammunition in her claims towards a potential MCW Women’s Championship.
MCW Tag Team Championship Triple Threat: The Brat Pack (Nick Bury & Mitch Waterman) vs. The Law (Dowie James & Adam Brooks) vs. Sex Rock (Elliot Sexton & Jonah Rock)
Ever since capturing the MCW Tag Team Championships, The Brat Pack have faced all challengers, and despite the occasional stumble have continued to prove their dominance over the division. With this dominance has come an air of arrogance as they now continually claim to be “the greatest tag team in MCW history”, something which former two-time champions The Law have taken offence with. The Law was the first team to answer The Brat Pack’s open challenge, but they haven’t been the only team to throw their hat into the ring. In just the last few days TMDK stable mates Elliot Sexton and Jonah Rock have also answered the challenge. Can The Law keep their disdain for each other in-check and become three-time champs or will The Brat Pack find a way to overcome the odds and slip out of Vendetta still MCW Tag Team Champions?
MCW Intercommonwealth Championship: Slex vs. Rat Daddy
2018 in MCW really was the year of the Intercommonwealth Championship, with it being held by the likes of Will Ospreay, Robbie Eagles, Adam Brooks and ultimately by the current champion Slex. Now with the prestige of the championship at an all-time high, challenges are coming from all over the country. The first challenger for Slex in 2019 is set to be the rising star from Adelaide, Rat Daddy. Rat Daddy has become the talk of the country over the last few months and is set to face his biggest challenge to date when he steps foot into the MCW ring for his debut against one of Australia’s finest. Slex has been consistently putting on the match of the night since returning to MCW against Kazuchika Okada in 2017. There is the very real possibility that this match steals the show and is certainly one not to miss.
Jimmy Havoc vs. Ritchie Taylor
International star Jimmy Havoc returns to MCW this weekend, fresh off a debut at Korakuen Hall for Fight Club: PRO, and will undoubtedly bring the violence. Standing across the ring from Havoc will be another relative newcomer to MCW in Ritchie Taylor. Taylor has been smashing down doors around Melbourne, which has captured the attention of MCW who have given him this opportunity to showcase what he can do. Will one of the hottest prospects emerging on the scene in 2019 be able to steal the spotlight away from the international star? If he does where does this place Taylor on the MCW pecking order?
