Indie Watch is our regular series that looks at all of the amazing talents working the independent circuits around the world. Some are veterans revitalizing their careers, some are indie prospects hitting their peaks, while others are names to be on the watch for! In this edition, we will be taking a look at another rising face of women’s independent wrestling in New Jersey’s “Legit” Leyla Hirsch, who is going from the US indies to international.
The women’s wrestling scene is going through a boom period of amazing new stars being developed monthly, such as Kris Statlander, AQA, Allie Kat, and more emerging as main event stars, not just in women’s wrestling, but all of indie wrestling. Another name to add to that list is New Jersey’s Leyla Hirsch, who, three years into her career, is exploding on an international level.
Leyla Hirsch is a Russian immigrant who was adopted by an American couple when she was just eight years old. She grew up in the United States, and at the age of 14 became hooked on pro wrestling. A year later, she began amateur wrestling in high school and college. In 2017, she headed to the CZW Dojo to train as a professional wrestler, after a chance introduction to David Starr. In September of that year, she made her Combat Zone Wrestling (CZW) debut as part of their Dojo Wars series. She made her main CZW roster debut in February of 2018, when she answered an open challenge from Penelope Ford at CZW Greetings from Asbury Park. She continued to be a mainstay on CZW Dojo Wars, but made frequent big fights on the main CZW shows as well, including a huge win over indie legend Mercedes Martinez in only her third actual CZW match.
By the end of 2018, she was a buzz name on many peoples “too watch” list for 2019, and she hasn’t disappointed. She’s spent a bulk of the year working overseas, where she’s become a star in Germany with Westside Xtreme Wrestling (wXw) and in the UK with Pro Wrestling EVE, competing against some of Europe’s best, like Valkyrie, Sammii Jayne, and “Session Moth” Martina. She still competes for CZW, but has broken out with Beyond Wrestling‘s Uncharted Territory.
With a year of international experience and working for more televised companies, 2020 is going to be a big year for Leyla Hirsch as she hits the next level in indie wrestling.
