On Sunday, Suwama officially relinquished the Triple Crown Championship, vacating the championship. It was cited by AJPW that the reasoning was due to Suwama being positive for COVID-19. His title match at Champions Night on June 26 against Champion Carnival winner Jake Lee is officially off as well. There is no match set to crown a new champion as of this writing. It’s likely that Lee will at the very least be included and the new champion will be crowned at the Champions Night show. Suwama’s reign with the Triple Crown Championship comes to an end at 454 days. His final defense was against Yoshitatsu in March.
Suwama defeated AJPW ace, Kento Miyahara, in March 2020 to earn his seventh reign as champion. He has the second-most combined days as Triple Crown Champion just behind legend Mitsuharu Misawa. Suwama’s seven reigns as champion are the most all-time for the title.
It’s unlikely that Lee is simply handed the championship. A number of options are plausible for what would likely be Lee’s opponent to crown the new champion. Miyahara is instantly a possibility, but he is scheduled to defend the AJPW World Tag Team Championship alongside partner Yuma Aoyagi at Champions Night. Former Triple Crown Champion Zeus could be an option as well. It’s worth noting that the three men to defeat Lee in Champion Carnival were Suwama, Aoyagi, and Shuji Ishikawa.
Anything is possible for the show with news of the match likely to come soon.
