Samoa Joe Gone From WWE

Samoa Joe

In what will be unsurprising news on this Thursday evening, Samoa Joe has been released by the WWE, according to Sean Ross Sapp of Fightful.

An Unusual Use of Samoa Joe

You may recall that Samoa Joe had only re-signed with the WWE back in June of 2021, after having been released from the company in April. He became a part of what was then still Triple H‘s incarnation of NXT; winning the NXT Championship from Karrion Kross at TakeOver 36 before an unfortunate injury – a recurring cause of stop/start momentum throughout Joe’s WWE tenure – would derail plans and lead to Tommaso Ciampa eventually capturing the title in Joe’s absence. Today’s release would mark the end of Joe’s second run with the company.

Samoa Joe had an unusual run in the WWE. First, he was the dominant, multi-time NXT Champion who arrived to the then black and gold brand to much fanfare. He would arrive on the main roster as a top heel; feuding with the likes of Brock Lesnar and long-time foe, AJ Styles, during an impressive, though not exactly title laden run. The frequent occurrence of injuries would lead to something resembling a non-official semi-retirement where Joe would make use of his excellent microphone skills as a color commentator for Raw – where he thrived. His release in April 2021 would signal the end of his commentary career before Triple H, rumored to be angered by his release, brought him back in June of last year. As we all know, Triple H’s NXT has been completely deconstructed – with yesterday’s batch of backstage releases clearly signalling as such – and Joe was merely another victim of the changes sweeping through NXT. Wherever Joe ends up next will be benefiting from the acquiring of a seasoned, veteran of the game with much to pass onto the next generation. We wish him all the best.
