Announced this past week during WWC’s weekly television program, ‘The Nature Boy’ Ric Flair will be appearing at the company’s 49th Anniversary Event.
The main event of the night will see Andrade El Idolo facing Carlito. As such, Ric Flair will be accompanying Andrade, his new son-in-law, at ringside as his second for the bout. Due to health concerns, it’s doubtful Carlos Colon will be doing the same for his own son in said match.
The match was originally slated to take place early in 2022 as a part of the company’s 48th Anniversary event, Ric Flair not included. However, due to an outburst in COVID-19 cases, a lockdown was placed on the island of Puerto Rico and as such, WWC opted to simply and quietly cancel the 48th Anniversary event.
As of this point, there are no plans to broadcast the event at any capacity. Tradition dictates that matches from their Anniversary events only televise the following year, en route to said year’s own Anniversary event.
As of this moment, it is the only match announced for the card, which is slated to take place on August 6th from the Ruben Rodriguez Coliseum in Bayamon, Puerto Rico. A building that has been host to many wrestling events and his the rare for the island capacity of tarping off a large portion of its seating. With no ringside setup, its lowest capacity holds up to 3,000 seated. Though, it would be a bit gracious to say they can sell more than that given the company’s status these days as well as given the current level of interest among fans. Though, with no other matches announced yet, it’s possible they could come up with some match that can generate a decent amount of interest.
Ric Flair has had a long history with Puerto Rico wrestling. In particular having feuds with many of the island’s most prominent stars in it’s heyday, such as Carlos Colon, Hercules Ayala, Abdullah The Butcher and The Invader #1. Many of those matches being for the NWA World Heavyweight Championship. In particular, one match with Carlos Colon saw the crowd become so rowdy, Ric Flair opted mid-match to lose the NWA World Heavyweight Championship to Colon without any approval, only for the title to be returned off-screen. The story led to WWC rechristening its main title as the WWC Universal Championship. Seeing as “it was more prestigious than the NWA World Championship” now. That Universal title is currently held by Xavant, currently in the midst of his second reign.
Scheduled originally for WWC’s 48th Anniversary show months ago, The Good Brothers, Alberto El Patron and Jake Hager were slated to appear. For Albert and Hager, it would be their return to the promotion. Same case for Luke Gallows. With Karl Anderson making his debut. However, as already mentioned, all plans for that event were scrapped following the January lockdown ruling of Puerto Rico.
