AEW culminates its week in Worcester, MA, with tonight’s Rampage broadcast taped Wednesday from the DCU Center. Once known as the Centrum, the building has seen events from ECW, WCW, WWF and now AEW which is a rather unique happening. It must’ve been quite surreal for Tony Schiavone here. Given it’s the building where “the butts were put on the seats.” When on the January 4 edition of WCW Monday Nitro, Tony, under Eric Bischoff’s instruction, spoiled the main event of that night’s pretaped episode of Raw announcing to the world that former WCW signee, Mick Foley, would be “winning their World Championship.” It was followed by Schiavone’s infamous line and in WCW’s highest of hubris-guided moments, was struck down by karma. As Nitro viewers turned in droves to watch Mankind win his first WWF Championship. And those that stayed with Nitro, were “rewarded” with the infamous “Fingerpoke Of Doom” as Kevin Nash practically gifted the WCW World Heavyweight Championship to H0llywood Hogan and the NWO reunited. Thus dooming WCW. But now on to the AEW Rampage card.

Trios Start To Roll Out
AEW has announced that a tournament is coming to crown AEW’s first Trios Champions. Brackets need to be filled and AEW just happens to have quite a lot of groups in its midst. This match seems to be our first step in that direction. The long-established fan-favorite group of Chuck Taylor, Trent Berreta, and Orange Cassidy, The Best Friends, take on the yet untested trio of ROH and TNA veteran Jay Lethal, the retired manager/former wrestler Sonjay Dutt and their giant, Satnam Singh. If there is any setting where Singh can thrive, it’s being covered up by 5 extravagant wrestlers.
Though, given the popularity of the trio, I greatly doubt the Best Friends are the ones taking the fall in this match.
Anna Jay-AS
The newest member of the Jericho Appreciation Society, Anna Jay, will have her first match as a member of the group. She takes on someone who has been slighted by the group several times in Ruby Soho. Soho has already had several altercations with Tay Conti and her arm was nearly broken in the group’s bid to antagonize Eddie Kingston.
Anna Jay, prior to her heel turn was one of AEW’s more popular young women but was pretty underutilized. It would seem now we might be seeing her in a more prominent role. While Ruby Soho, ironically finds herself on a similar boat being quite popular and underutilized. Let’s see who goes on to better things.
The New Face Of ROH Speaks
The Ring Of Honor on Rampage pattern seems to continue, sort of. The new World Champion, Claudio Castagnoli, will speak for the first time since winning the Championship at Death Before Dishonor. While the man he dethroned seems to be on the outs, it’s pretty clear we’re looking forward now that the former ROH Tag Team Champion, one-half of the well-remembered Kings Of Wrestling with Chris Hero, has now returned after a stint in WWE and now stands at the top, as a first-time world champion.
But who’s next? While plans for ROH have seemingly stalled, there is a clear interest in continuing the push of the Blackpool Combat Club who now possess both of the World titles currently active under AEW.
New Blood of ROH vs Old Guard of ROH
Continuing the ROH theme, we have an announced match as the ROH, TNA, and WWE veteran Matt Sydal felt Lee Moriarty’s not-so-honorable way of winning last week was not up to his standards. So now the two will clash in what will be a unique mix of styles. As Matt Sydal’s rather unique quick, high-flying style clashes with Lee Moriarty’s unique “Taiga Style” blend of World Of Sports grappling and Japanese Jr. Heavyweight quick action.
