Preview: AEW Rampage (8/18/23) – Rey Fenix vs. Komander

All Elite Wrestling had a peculiar episode of AEW Dynamite this week from the Bridgestone Arena. Which included a ‘Texas Chainsaw Massacre Deathmatch’. Their stint continues with AEW Rampage this week. This same arena, back known as the Nashville Arena on February 17, 1997, saw a rather infamous episode of Monday Night Raw that came the day after In Your House 15: Final Four.

Fresh off winning the vacant WWF Championship, Bret Hart was set to defend the title against Sycho Sid. But was attacked by Stone Cold Steve Austin. The match would be postponed until the main event slot of the night, where Austin again attacked Bret.

But this time did it in a manner that resulted in Sycho Sid winning the WWF Championship. Setting up the famous ‘I Quit’ match between The Hitman and the Texas Rattlesnake for WrestleMania 13. As well as the odd main event of that show: Undertaker vs. Sycho Sid.

Good Lucha Friday

It’s Friday and AEW does tend to deliver some very Arena Mexico-friendly matches on Fridays. As such we have Rey Fenix taking on Komander in what is sure to be an insane, high-flying bout. These two have not had the chance to meet in the ring yet for any company. So this is a very fresh match to see.

However, one has to ask if Rey Fenix will have to watch his back now that he, alongside Penta El Zero Miedo is set to team up with Eddie Kingston and the Best Friends to take on the Blackpool Combat Club and three mystery partners for Stadium Stampede at All In.

This Ain’t The Outback

As All In draws closer and Aussie Open are set to defend their Ring Of Honor Tag Team Championships against Adam Cole and AEW World Champion MJF at the Zero Hour, they look to prepare. So they’re facing two other men who had a bit of a bad time on Dynamite in Brother Zay and Ethan Page.

Aussie Open tried to attack MJF and Adam Cole following their escapades at the Outback Steakhouse, inquiring the wrath of Tony Khan for double-clotheslining people backstage and then bearing their souls in the ring. But things did not pan out for the Australian branch of the United Empire and they had to duck out.

While Brother Zay and Ethan Page attempted to assist Jeff Hardy in the infamous Texas Chainsaw Massacre Deathmatch against Jeff Jarrett and his goons. But wound up thwarted by Jeff Jarret’s ace in the hole: Leatherface. And a hammer. Let’s see who can bounce back after a relatively unsuccessful Dynamite for the parties involved.

Women’s Tag Team Action

Dr. Britt Baker, D.M.D secured her spot for All In, defeating The Bunny to enter the Four-Way match at All In for the AEW Women’s World Championship. Also in the match are Saraya, Toni Storm, and current Champion Hikaru Shida.

En route to that match, two of the four participants have grabbed tag team partners. Hikaru Shida teams up with the ever-popular Skye Blue to take on The Outcasts combination of Toni Storm and Ruby Soho. This is Toni Storm’s first match since losing the title to Hikaru Shida. And since then, she’s been acting peculiar. Running around in a robe and barefoot. Throwing her shoes around.

Hopefully, she has her ring gear ready for this return to action. While Hikaru Shida takes a bit of a break from defending the title now that she has a Pay-Per-View defense set.

All that, plus Dr. Britt Baker DMD is set to speak as the march to AEW All In continues, tonight on AEW Rampage.
