#AndNEW: Mat Fitchett Wins AAW World Championship

Besties In The World (Mat Fithcett & Davey Vega) win

Death, but not for you, Gunslinger. Never for you.

In a move anticipated by wrestling fans all over the midwest, Mat Fitchett won the AAW World Championship from Fred Yehi on November 27 in Chicago, Illinois. Taking place at the Windy City Classic XVI, Fitchett won his first singles championship since 2016 and his second all-time throughout his now 12-year career.

The Gunslinger is no stranger to AAW Gold up to this point, holding the AAW Tag Team Championships with fellow Bestie in the World Davey Vega three times and holding nearly every record imaginable with the belts. After seeking out a singles run in AAW separate from Vega since the beginning of the year, The Dirty Rook became a top name in the company, unsuccessfully challenging for the Heritage Title back in May. Then, in October, Fitchett went on the run of his life in the Jim Lynam Memorial Tournament, defeating reigning Tag Champion and former Heritage Champion Jake Something before going on to defeat ACH and Josh Alexander, two former champions and Aces of AAW, to win the entire thing.

Mat Fitchett’s title win further cements his vitality to AAW over the years. Though they are not currently competing together in AAW, Fitchett winning the World Title completes the AAW Grand Slam between the Besties, a feat that emphasizes their status as one of the greatest duos to ever step foot in an AAW ring, both in singles and tag action. Beyond that, Fitchett has been a stalwart of the midwest indie scene for years and has continued to be considered by fans and wrestlers alike as a largely underrated workhorse on the verge of being a household name. Congratulations to Mat Fitchett for standing tall atop the mountain that is AAW.

The top title was not the only one to change hands in AAW as Skye Blue captured the women’s title while Ace Perry and Hammerstone won the company’s tag titles.
