Friday Night SmackDown has arrived! The “Road to WrestleMania” is now well and truly underway, with last week’s Saudi-hosted Elimination Chamber event now firmly behind us. At the event, Brock Lesnar overcame five other men to win the WWE Championship from Bobby Lashley and Roman Reigns retained his WWE Universal Championship in a match with Goldberg, leading to Brock and Roman being involved in a contract signing segment on tonight’s SmackDown. We have more than one segment to preview ahead of tonight’s SmackDown, so let’s dive right in.
Elimination Chamber Rematch: Drew McIntyre vs. Madcap Moss
Rewind to two years ago. Global uncertainty wreaked havoc upon the earth, as the COVID-19 pandemic brought the world to a screeching halt. As a result of the pandemic, crowds were no longer allowed to attend live events, such as WWE shows – leading to empty crowds and the eventual “ThunderDome”. At this time, Drew McIntyre was on top of the world; fresh off of winning the 2020 Royal Rumble and chasing the WWE Championship (which he would win at WrestleMania 36) and establishing himself as the face of the WWE. Two years later and Drew is feuding with Madcap Moss and Happy Corbin. With all due respect, this feud feels like a waste of Drew’s time. Here’s hoping this rematch marks the end of the feud.
Sami Zayn to Celebrate Capturing Intercontinental Championship
On last week’s episode of SmackDown, Sami Zayn overcame Shinsuke Nakamura to capture the WWE Intercontinental Championship. Sami Zayn is enjoying a nice ride of momentum at the moment – he is also currently riding high in a hilarious feud with Johnny Knoxville and the cast of Jackass. Tonight, he will celebrate his victory and the segment will likely hint to his WrestleMania opponent.
Brock Lesnar and Roman Reigns Contract Signing to Headline SmackDown
The likely SmackDown headlining segment is the contract signing between Roman Reigns and Brock Lesnar. These two behemoths have wrestled each other at two previous WrestleMania events (31 and 34) and Roman has won neither of them (in fact, Seth Rollins won the first encounter, with the oft-dubbed “Heist of the Century”). At WrestleMania 38, Roman has a chance to notch a first WrestleMania win over the man who can easily claim the distinction of being Roman’s greatest ever WWE rival. However, there are differences this time. Firstly, Roman is now the heel, with Brock the babyface. Secondly, Paul Heyman now stands in Roman’s corner (though this could change, again). Thirdly, both men will walk into WrestleMania as a world champion – making this match a “winner takes all”, high stakes match not seen within the WWE in some time. Expect tonight’s contract signing to end in a brawl.
Not Announced But Expected For SmackDown
– Charlotte Flair and Ronda Rousey will no doubt continue their feud, ahead of their big WrestleMania match for the SmackDown Women’s Championship.
