Report: Commentator Tom Phillips Released by WWE

Tom Phillips WWE

According to Fightful’s Sean Ross Sapp and Robert DeFelice, Tom Phillips has been released from World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) after nine years with the company. The release comes just days after Adnan Virk, Phillips’ replacement on the Raw commentary team, mutually parted ways with the company.

Phillips has been the lead commentator for every single one of WWE’s current brands at one point in his career with the company. Phillips most recently finished up as the head commentator for Monday Night Raw when Virk signed with the company. He had been working with Nigel McGuinness on 205 Live after being removed from Raw. WWE’s website had also stated when Virk came on that Phillips would “oversee special projects for WWE’s programming on Peacock and at the WWE Performance Center in Orlando. Phillips also remains in his role of Senior Manager, On-Air Talent.”

Fightful makes note that Phillips had changed his social media handles to his real name, Tom Hannifan. Many believed Phillips would be taking back the Raw commentary role when Virk left the company, but it was announced on Wednesday that former MMA commentator Jimmy Smith would be taking over the reins.

The release of Phillips has not been confirmed by WWE as of this writing.
