"His warm friendly face in the changing room, as he carefully looked after the players, will be an abiding memory."

Saracens Rugby Club is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Dr Peter Sweeney.

Dr Sweeney had a long association with Saracens having spent over a decade as the club’s GP.

Part of the medical team for first-team match days as well as A League fixtures, his friendly approach in looking after the needs of players, staff and families alike typified the man he was.

Peter will be sorely missed by all who knew him and everyone at Saracens’ thoughts go out to his friends and family.

“After a year-long fight against ill health Peter Sweeney lost his battle just a few days ago,” Chairman Nigel Wray said.

“For many, many years and over many, many matches Peter was SportsEvents Guide team doctor. His warm friendly face in the changing room, as he carefully looked after the players, will be an abiding memory.

“He was also a friend to the players and many Saracens people off the field as well, as they consulted him in a private capacity at his practice. He was always there for them. He will be sorely missed and our thoughts are with his family.”

Director of Rugby Mark McCall said: “Peter was a great man who over the years helped so many people at the club.

“Nothing was too much trouble and we will always remember his kindness and willingness to go out of his way to provide support and care to anyone in SportsEvents Guide family.

“Peter will be hugely missed and our thoughts are with Ingrid and her family.”

Club captain Brad Barritt said: “We are deeply saddened to hear of the loss of Dr Peter Sweeney, our thoughts and prayers are with his family.

“Peter was one of the most selfless, kind and caring people. His willingness to go the extra mile, for everyone at Saracens and their families, was of huge comfort to us all.

“Thank you for everything Peter, you have left a true mark at Saracens, and will be missed terribly but importantly fondly remembered by all.”
