David Goffin qualifies for World Tour Finals

David Goffin has become the first Belgian to qualify for the ATP end of season World Tour Finals in the singles.

Goffin will make his first appearance as a direct entrant and joins Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer, Marin Cilic, Dominic Thiem, along with Grigor Dimitrov and Alexander Zverev who also make their debuts.

The Belgian has featured at the event in London once before, as an alternate, when he played one match in the Round Robin section and lost to Novak Djokovic.

With Djokovic, Andy Murray, Stan Wawrinka, and others having called time on their season early, it left the field wide open for new faces to make an appearance. Goffin is the seventh player to qualify for the end of season elite event, which would be lacking big names if it were not for Nadal Federer.

However, with fresh faces making an appearance at the World Tour Finals, the final event of the men’s tour will be exciting for neutral tennis fans.

There is one more automatic qualification spot left, and the field is wide open. There are plenty of players who can claim that last place, which makes the current Paris masters the one to watch. As the final chance to qualify for London, the players still with a chance will be determined to win their way in. Who can make it in?

There are five players in the running for the last spot, the scenarios for the final spot are shown below.

Juan Martin Del Potro

If the Argentine makes the final, he qualifies for the eighth spot.

If Del Potro makes the semi-final, the Argentine qualifies for the eighth spot. If Del Potro loses before the semifinals, and John Isner or Jack Sock wins the title then the tournament champion qualifies for the eighth spot.

If Del Potro loses to John Isner and Isner or Sock doesn’t lift the title, then Pablo Carreno Busta qualifies for the eighth spot.

If Isner wins the title in Paris, then the American qualifies for the eighth spot.

There is everything to play for in the next few days.
