Wimbledon 2019: A Tournament Full of Upsets

Both the men’s and women’s Wimbledon tournaments have been full of upsets, with some of the top players in the game making an early exit in the opening week against players who were either on their game on a given day, or rapidly rising in terms of ranking and performance level. The women’s final on Saturday was one of the later week upsets, with Serena Williams going down to Simona Halep, a player who has always been capable of playing incredible tennis, but still had only captured a single grand slam in her career compared to the 23 for Serena. Despite the tale of the tape being a bit lopsided, Halep crushed Williams with an efficient display that no player could have matched.

Wimbledon betting tips are valuable for the tournament that we had, with other big upsets including the run of Coco Gauff, the 15 year old American qualifier beat three WTA tour stalwarts, including Venus Williams, before succumbing to the champion Halep in round 4. Former Grand Slam champions Naomi Osaka and Angelique Kerber also lost in the first two rounds on the women’s side.

The men’s draw saw normally reliable talents Dominic Thiem, Alexander Zverev, and Stefanos Tsitsipas lose in the first round, with John Isner, Stan Wawrinka, and British #1 Kyle Edmund going out in round 2. Many had predicted at least some of those names would factor into the later stages of the tournament, but instead we got a Federer vs Nadal semifinal, and Novak Djokovic, the defending champion, into the final. The run of semifinalist Roberto Bautista Agut also can’t be overlooked, He took advantage of an easier than expected draw that included the dark horse Guido Pella in the quarters, to reach the semis with just a single set dropped en route.  Pella had upset former finalist Kevin Anderson to reach that stage, normally most comfortable on clay, he surprised everyone with how skilled his game was on grass.

In summation, the pressure of Wimbledon and the grass court surface itself, rarely featured on the ATP/WTA tour, produces a tournament where upsets are more likely than you would normally expect at the Grand Slam stage.
