Andreas Seppi and Grigor Dimitrov are looking for form as they face off on day 1 of the 2019 US Open. American Jack Sock and Kei Nishikori are seeking the same in their opening round matches. Steen Kirby and Yesh Ginsburg offer their predictions for this match and others featuring Novak Djokovic and Daniil Medvevev.
Guido Pella vs Pablo Carreno Busta
Steen: Both PCB and Pella are playing well on hard courts, PCB has more weapons but Pella’s consistency should win the way. Pella in 4
Yesh: This match is too good to be a first-round match, though. Carreno Busta is a solid player, but Pella is just more solid. Expect lots of god rallies, but Pella will come through in the end. Pella in 5
Andreas Seppi vs Grigor Dimitrov
Steen: Seppi is struggling but Dimitrov is playing even worse. Once a slam contender, Dimitrov will is now an underdog in the first round of the US Open. Seppi in 5
Yesh: Both of these players have been top players but have struggled recently. Seppi seems towards the end of his career, while Dimitrov just can’t find his top form. I think Dimitrov is closer to achieving his peak, though. Dimitrov in 4
Jack Sock vs Pablo Cuevas
Steen: Neither playing has been winning matches lately but Cuevas is the more focused and motivated player here, even with Sock playing his home slam. Sock is headed back to the futures tour soon. Cuevas in 4
Yesh: Sock needs some wins here, and badly. His form is nowhere to be seen, though, so don’t expect it to come. Cuevas in 3
Kei Nishikori vs Marco Trungelliti
Steen: Nishikori hasn’t won since Wimbledon and Trungelliti qualified. The Japanese #1 will be tested in this one but should still pull through and hopefully regain some confidence. Nishikori in 4
Yesh: Nishikori might have some trouble in the third round, but he got a pretty easy draw here. He won’t need any five-setters in his first two matches. Nishikori in 3
