All eight of the WTA Abierto Tampico Day 1 matches went as we expected. As such, the draw looks very promising as we head into Wednesday’s action. Another eight matches means we will once again have two sets of predictions, this being the first. Headlining the day’s play are the likes of Marie Bouzkova, Leylah Fernandez and Elise Mertens, all of whom are household names in the women’s game. Whether they continue to impress is exactly the question we’re going to answer here, so let’s get started.
WTA Abierto Tampico Day 2 Predictions
Rebecca Marino vs Moyuka Uchijima
Head-to-head: First meeting
Moyuka Uchijima continued her charge into the top 100 with a well earned win against Emma Navarro in the last round. However, the Japanese youngster faces a tougher test here in Rebecca Marino. The Canadian is enjoying a career year herself. She has won 47 matches this season and will finish inside the top 100 for the first time since 2011. She has a big game and loves hard courts, making her a real test for Uchijima here. The youngster certainly has a lot to play for and will throw the kitchen sink at Marino here. If she can land enough winners, and I think she will, then she should score another upset win in this one.
Prediction: Uchijima in 3
Camila Osorio vs Eva Vedder
Head-to-head: First meeting
Eva Vedder is one of three players left in the draw who rank outside the top 200 in the women’s game. Of the three, she certainly has the kindest matchup this round. Camila Osorio is a talented young player but is not yet fully comfortable on hard courts at this level. The young Columbian has shown enough on the surface this year to give me belief that she will still win here. However, it might not be as smooth a ride as you’d expect given the ranking disparity.
Prediction: Osorio in 3
Katerina Siniakova vs Magdalena Frech
Head-to-head: First meeting
Katerina Siniakova continues to impress in the final weeks of the WTA season. The Czech is a recent title winner and easily dismissed the talented Alycia Parks in straight sets on Tuesday. She looks the favourite to win again here against Magdalena Frech, a player more comfortable on clay. The Pole is one of several women who have hovered near the top 100 for much of the past three years without ever pushing on and making waves on the WTA Tour. A deep run here would certainly help in that regard. However, it’s hard to make a case for her against the in form Siniakova. I expect Frech will be on the losing end of proceedings in this one.
Prediction: Siniakova in 2
Marie Bouzkova vs Elisabetta Cocciaretto
Head-to-head: First meeting
This should be a good test for Marie Bouzkova. Elisabetta Cocciaretto is a bright young talent who looks set to stay on the WTA Tour for many years to come. The young Italian is unsurprisingly at her most comfortable on clay, but has shown flashes of good tennis on other surfaces as well. She will need something near her best to trouble Bouzkova though, as the Czech has established herself as one of the top players in the women’s game. A 33-9 record on hard courts this year makes Bouzkova the clear favourite here and I expect the result to match that.
Prediction: Bouzkova in 2
