The WTA event in Eastbourne this week features an unusually strong field considering Wimbledon is coming next week, with even the two finalists of last year’s Wimbledon taking part. There should be plenty of very exciting action all week, starting this Monday with a lot of potentially very tight, high quality matches.
WTA Eastbourne Day 1 Predictions
Shelby Rogers vs Camila Osorio
Head-to-head: first meeting
Osorio had a pretty strong clay season and she won a match on grass last week, but on this surface it’s fair to give Rogers a slight advantage, even if at the end of the day it should be a very close match decided by a few points and small details. There’s very little to choose between the two players here.

Jodie Burrage vs Lauren Davis
Head-to-head: Davis 1-0 Burrage
Davis won in pretty straightforward fashion when the pair faced at Wimbledon 2021, but Burrage seems to be in much better form at the moment, with even a run to the Nottingham final on grass already. That said, Davis is still generally the more solid and overall superior player and should have the slight edge here.
Prediction: Davis in 3

Shuai Zhang vs Harriet Dart
Head-to-head: first meeting
Zhang might be the far higher-ranked player, but she’s on an absolutely horrific 10-match losing streak and completely devoid of confidence. Meanwhile, Dart has been playing well on the grass so far this season and has a very clear advantage here despite her much lower ranking. Zhang is bound to turn things around at some point, but it’s unlikely that grass is the surface it happens on.
Prediction: Dart in 2

Karolina Pliskova vs Elise Mertens
Head-to-head: Pliskova 2-1 Mertens
Pliskova is on a 4-match losing streak coming into this one, but she generally does well on grass, with even a Wimbledon final to her name in 2021, and should be able to gain some momentum here ahead of Wimbledon. Mertens is far from an easy first round opponent, but Pliskova should be able to pull through.
Prediction: Pliskova in 3
