2024 Wimbledon: Top 5 Men’s Matches
-
Taylor Fritz d. Alexander Zverev 4-6 6-7 (4) 6-4 7-6 (3) 6-3
There were many great comebacks from the brink of defeat in this tournament, and arguably this match was the most important. Fritz often struggles in close moments, and he played some fearless tennis at times to take out Zverev, who was struggling with injury during portions of the match. It denied Zverev a path to a fourth consecutive Grand Slam quarterfinal.
- Thanasi Kokkinakis d. Felix Auger-Aliassime 4-6 5-7 7-6 (9) 6-4 6-4
Kokkinakis saved four match points in this intriguing encounter, showcasing his volleys and staying calm under pressure. This match was affected by rain on multiple occasions, but the quality never dropped too much during this match. After the Aussie has dealt with multiple tough losses in the past few seasons, such as against Andy Murray at the 2023 Australian Open, this was a thrilling victory for him.
-
Jannik Sinner d. Matteo Berrettini 7-6 (3) 7-6 (4) 2-6 7-6 (4)
This match showed fans that Berrettini can still play top-tier tennis when healthy, as he hit 65 winners in just four sets. Sinner struggled to defend Berrettini’s forehand and serve but eventually demonstrated his talent as World No. 1 in the latter stages.
2. Carlos Alcaraz d. Frances Tiafoe 5-7 6-2 4-6 7-6 (2) 6-2
Many thought Novak Djokovic would be Alcaraz’s biggest test during the tournament, but it was ultimately Frances Tiafoe. Alcaraz was down 0-30 in a pivotal game in the fourth set, but roared back to win after playing four solid points in a row under pressure. Tiafoe served well and played cat-and-mouse tennis to pressure Alcaraz at times.
Honorable Mentions:
Lloyd Harris d. Alex Michelsen 3-6 4-6 7-6 (5) 7-2 7-6 (9)
A dramatic, underrated match on Day 1 of the Championships — Harris was one of multiple winners who came back from two sets to one down in the first round. Harris hit an impressive 62 winners, while Michelsen valiantly defended and limited his unforced error count. The highlight of the match was a stunning match point by the eventual winner.
Holger Rune d. Quentin Halys 1-6 6-7(4) 6-4 7-6 4) 6-1
Rune would have probably lost this match had it finished on an outside court. Once the match was moved to No. 1 Court due to darkness, Rune displayed some flashy and exciting tennis, hitting multiple hot shots and coming back from a mini-break down in the fourth set tiebreak to win. The fifth set was probably the best set Rune played all season.
Novak Djokovic d. Alexei Popyrin 4-6 6-3 6-4 7-6 (3)
In an interesting match under the roof, Djokovic did well to avoid a fifth set against Popyrin, who was playing some of his best tennis at stages of the match. This was arguably the Serb’s biggest test of the tournament before the final.
-
Daniil Medvedev d. Jannik Sinner 6-7(7) 6-4 7-6(4) 2-6 6-3
The best match of the tournament was arguably this heavyweight clash between two Top 5 players. Neither player brought perfect tennis to the court, but it was thrilling to see an up-and-down encounter with winners from all sides. Medvedev adjusted his court position to play aggressive tennis on the grass, while Sinner had to switch up his game after feeling dizzy on court.
