The Nordea Open in Bastad, Sweden, is a historic ATP 250 event that the players love. The field this year is filled with top players as they search for some matches before the Olympics begin. Rafael Nadal is the main attraction, but two other Top 10 players also make the draw. As always, we here at LWOT will offer our predictions for every match on the slate for Day 2. We split Tuesday’s matches into three articles. Our other two feature Rafael Nadal vs Leo Borg and Roberto Carballes Baena vs Roman Safiullin. But who do you think will advance?
ATP Bastad Day 2 Predictions
Taro Daniel vs Timofey Skatov
Head-to-Head: First meeting
Taro Daniel made the finals in Auckland in January but has been struggling to win matches since then. He has won just two of his last 10 matches on tour and desperately needs some wins to keep himself in the top 100. Timofey Skatov tore through his qualifying rounds and will be in a lot of confidence. Skatov is new to the tour but has already registered impressive wins against Tomas Martin Etcheverry and Francisco Cerundolo, this year at the Davis Cup. Daniel can play some good tennis but is not in the form to do it and Skatov is hungry for wins.
Prediction: Skatov in 3
Elias Ymer vs Sumit Nagal
Head-to-Head: First meeting
Elias Ymer showed some of his best tennis ever at Wimbledon against Jack Draper and if he can play at that level consistently, he can make his top 100 debut. Playing in front of his home crowd at the Nordea Open will give him lots of confidence and motivation but it won’t be easy against a solid opponent. Sumit Nagal is at his career-high ranking of 68 and has played some brilliant tennis on the dirt this year. His forehand is a big weapon, that he can hit from anywhere on the court. Nagal is more consistent and has played a lot more tennis than Ymer.
Prediction: Nagal in 3
Camilo Ugo Carabelli vs Henrique Rocha
Head-to-Head: First Meeting
Camilo Ugo Carabelli is back inside the top 100 thanks to a great season so far on the Challenger Tour. He will hope to continue that form in the ATP tour and get some wins under his belt to secure his position inside the Top 100. Henrique Rocha is new to the tour level and is an exciting prospect for Portuguese tennis. He has a good baseline game and can hit big from both wings. This match can go either way but I give the edge to Carabelli.
Prediction: Carabelli in 3
Federico Coria vs Thiago Monteiro
Head-to-Head: Coria 1-0 Monteiro
Federico Coria has played a full season on clay and reaching the semifinals in Buenos Aires is his best result this year. He is capable of beating some good players but has lost his last four matches against tough opponents and unfortunately, his first-round opponent at the Nordea Open is not easy either. Thiago Monteiro is having his best season on tour in terms of win percentage. He has consistently beaten players ranked above him and will fancy his chances to go deep this week. If both the players play well, this match can be very entertaining. Monteiro has a slight edge because of his consistently high level in the last few months.
Prediction: Monteiro in 3
