The shortlist for the 2024 ATP Awards has been announced, with World No. 1 Jannik Sinner and his coaching team notably absent.
Sinner recently capped off a stellar season by leading Italy to defend the Davis Cup title for the first time in their history. This triumph followed a dominant year in which he secured a tour-leading eight singles titles, including victories at both the Australian Open and the US Open.
Last year, Sinner was named “Most Improved Player,” while his coaches, Darren Cahill and Simone Vagnozzi, earned the “Coach of the Year” award. However, neither Sinner nor his coaching duo have received nominations in their respective categories this year.
The player award nominees are determined by votes from the International Tennis Writers’ Association (ITWA), while the “Coach of the Year” shortlist is compiled through an initial round of voting by ATP coaches.
Notable nominees this year include Carlos Alcaraz, Grigor Dimitrov, Casper Ruud, and the recently retired Dominic Thiem, who are in contention for the Stefan Edberg Sportsmanship Award. Meanwhile, Brit Jack Draper has been recognized for his breakthrough season with a nomination for “Most Improved Player of the Year,” and his coach, James Trotman, is shortlisted for “Coach of the Year.”
The winners will be announced during the week beginning Monday, December 9.
It is perhaps unsurprising that Sinner himself was not shortlisted for these awards, given their specific criteria. However, the omission of his coaches, Cahill and Vagnozzi, raises eyebrows. After winning the “Coach of the Year” award last season, the pair arguably had an even stronger campaign in 2024, guiding Sinner through his record-breaking year.
